Old Fence Out, Ground Prepared
On the day, we strip out the old fencing and cart it away — posts, panels, concrete and all.
Then we set out the new line accurately and dig the post holes to the proper depth. On West Norfolk's softer ground, post depth and a generous concrete footing are what keep a fence upright for the long haul, so we're meticulous about this stage.
Posts, Panels & Perfect Lines
Posts go in first, concreted, aligned and levelled before anything else happens. Once they're set, we fit gravel boards, panels or boards, and any trellis topping — keeping heights consistent and lines dead straight, even across sloping ground.

How long does fence installation take?
Most domestic fencing jobs are done in 1-3 days. A straightforward run of panels can often be finished in a day, while a full garden perimeter with gates might take two or three. We'll give you a clear timescale with your quote.
Concrete posts or timber posts — which is better?
Both have their place. Concrete posts last the longest and never rot, making them a smart choice on damp ground or exposed plots. Timber posts look softer and more natural, and modern pressure-treated posts last well when properly installed. We'll happily talk through the trade-offs at your survey.
How high can my fence be without planning permission?
Generally, up to 2 metres in a back garden, and up to 1 metre where the fence borders a road or footpath. Listed buildings and conservation areas can have extra rules. If your situation looks like an exception, we'll flag it before any work starts.
Which side of the fence is mine?
There's no universal rule, despite the popular myths. Your property deeds or title plan usually show boundary responsibility with a "T" mark. If it's unclear, a friendly conversation with your neighbour before work starts saves headaches — and we're happy to advise.
Can you repair just one or two panels?
Yes — if the posts are sound, replacing individual panels or boards is quick and economical. If the posts themselves have rotted or worked loose, we'll tell you straight, because new panels on failing posts is money wasted.
Why do fences blow down in storms, and how do you prevent it?
Nearly always it's the posts — rotted at ground level or set too shallow — or solid panels acting like sails in exposed positions. We combat both: deep, well-concreted posts, gravel boards to keep timber out of wet ground, and advice on wind-friendly styles like closeboard for gardens that catch the weather.
How long will my new fence last?
A properly installed fence using pressure-treated timber should give you 15-20 years, often more with occasional care. Concrete posts and gravel boards extend that further by keeping the vulnerable timber away from ground moisture.
Do you take the old fence away?
Always. Removal and responsible disposal of your old fencing — panels, posts and old concrete footings — is included in the job. We leave your garden clear and tidy.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Not usually, as long as we can access the garden. Plenty of customers head to work and come home to a brand-new fence. We'll agree access arrangements before we start.
